History
As a result of the fact that the Alliance was formed from a diverse group consisting of Senators, ex-Military Officers, Mercenaries etc, the chain of command wasn't quite as clear as that of the Empire, which had taken a very large amount of its structural basis from that of the Republic. The top of the chain started with Alliance High Command, which consisted of the following:
Command Hierarchy

Commander in Chief - Rhiara D'Loroc
Alliance Minister of War (chief tactical strategist) - Jagre Hett
Alliance Chief of Staff (co-ordinated departments) - Lanaan Kutsiri
Supreme Allied Commanders
Subordinate to the Alliance High Command were the Supreme Allied Commanders, who oversaw their various departments, as follows:
Fleet Command (Fleet)— Arthon Drake III
Starfighter Command (StarCom / subservient to Fleet Command)
Ground Forces (Grunts)— the Alliance's ground troops.
Intelligence (Intel)— espionage, intelligence and analysis - Kagen Asano
Sector Command (SecCom)— responsible for oversight over the semi-autonomous Sector Forces controlled by governments and resistance cells that pledged allegiance to the Alliance.
Support Services (Support)— Maintained bases, staging areas, supply ships, safe-worlds, and manufacturing centers.
Ordnance and Supply (OaS)—weapons, equipment and supply procurement, and also R&D.
Guardians
'Guardian' is the formal term for those persons deemed as leaders, of a specific cell group, on respective planets. Although resentment and dissension toward the Empire are prevalent throughout the galaxy, the following planets have shown renowned rebellion toward the Empire through the actions of their respective, rebel cells. Guardians will periodically transmit their actions and activities to Rebel High Command, and are often called upon to meet personally with the Alliance High Command in order to direct future efforts in undermining the Empire.

Military Positions
The military positions of the Rebel Alliance were directly equivalent to those of the Empire, with the only differences being that the positions above Admiral and General were removed, with the addition of only Supreme Admiral and Supreme General being added, since the Alliance was never large enough to accommodate the need for a larger military bureaucracy, such as that used by the Empire. In addition to this, there was less separation between fleet and army officers, since the Rebellion's limited resources required that most of their troops be able to fulfill some roles, although there were cases where some were career Fleet officers, and some career Army officers, thus never switching between the two roles.
