Known Dark Jedi
Characteristics
Dark Jedi are often loners due to the nature of their chosen life. Typically rejected by Sith and Jedi alike they are not as malicious as Sith however this can vary depending on the individual and the experiences of such. Dark Jedi psychologically can either be incredibly stable or in a more classical sense Jedi who just suffered such stress they eventually broke and went underground. Despite typical conceptions Dark Jedi aren't essentially evil however ultimately out for themselves as their view the Force is usually given shape from a form born out of spiritual bankruptcy or cultural deviations disregarding such notions.
Ideology
Many Dark Jedi suffer from serious weaknesses in their personal ideology, Sith viewing Dark Jedi merely as imitators who can never become more than the Sith due to the fact they're driven ultimately by fear. Likewise the Jedi shun Dark Jedi as they are ruled by their emotions and ultimately are slaves to them making them unpredictable and exploitable.
That said, among the Jedi and Sith it is noted that the Dark Jedi can still prove exceedingly dangerous opponents. While psychologically and sociologically they are lacking this does not dispute the fact that Dark Jedi are hard to trace, unpredictable, treacherous and can frequently fight fire with fire with little or no disregard to future consequences. Whilst the majority of Dark Jedi rarely push their views of the Force beyond their comfort zones their are potential exceptions who have proved more than a match for many Jedi. And to many that is all that matters in the short term.
Some Dark Jedi are also noted to share a kinship for sentients of their particular nature making it a rare, albeit not impossible fact that Dark Jedi have few qualms about standing together. When Force Users as wildly varied as these work together they frequently do so to obtain some measure of power (a example being Naema Iou and her followers). The result of which often involves measures drawing on a number of force disciplines making it extremely difficult to counter-act once in progress.
Relationship With the Jedi and Sith
Although the Sith originate from Dark Jedi the Sith adhere to strict codes of practice and a solid defined history. They make use of unique techniques and skills such as Sith Alchemy and Genetic/Midichlorian Mutation. Dark Jedi in turn typically invent their own pseudo-religion in place of this and seems to be more focused on the individual. Some Sith view Dark Jedi as nothing compared to the power of the Sith however some Sith have taken notable time and effort to study Dark Jedi techniques.
When talking about the Jedi many Dark Jedi view the Jedi Order as one which has Stagnated. Dark Jedi, ideally tend to push themselves beyond what they are normally capable of making them extremely unpredictable. The Jedi in turn view this as a dangerous and easily self destructive practice which has proved time and time again to lead to nothing but the pain and suffering of others.
Weapons
Primarily the Force, its most common to see Dark Jedi armed with lightsabers mirroring that which the Sith used. However considering the individual and unique approaches such characters and movements have expressed over the millennia these weapons can vary greatly.
Witches of Dathomir
While widely considered to be self destructive an example of a Dark Jedi being part of something much more is when an Unnamed Jedi left the order heading to the planet Dathomir nearly seven hundred years before the purge. Here the Dark Jedi taught the population how to use the force and over the next few years turned around the way of life on the planet. This involved enslaving the men of the planet making it a matriarchal society and in turn turning the native Rancors from Predators to Pets. In turn giving rise to a entirely new force discipline tying closely into acts of social and psychological change within a entire civilization. Given the fact that these 'Nightsisters' make up nearly a entire population of a planet this establishes them as one of the more prominent arms of the Dark Side. While the Sith see a need for galactic domination its highlighted that Dark Jedi typically revert to cultural norms and exploit the force ultimately for a means of personal power seeing it as a extension of themselves, not some mystical body which the Jedi pass off as something nigh-on Godly.
