Non-Ranking Title
Initiate
This is an unofficial title and an unofficial rank that refers to a child with Force potential. These children have also been referred to as younglings (galactic slang for children of any sort) and also as Jedi Hopefuls.
At a very young ago, the Jedi initiates are brought from their homes and assigned to a group for training. If by the time an initiate turns thirteen (13) years of age he or she has not been chosen by a Jedi Knight to be their padawan (student), the youngling is placed into another, lesser role in the Jedi Services. Where they are placed is dictated by the student's talents.
Initiates do not wield a lightsaber. Instead, they are given a training saber and are instructed in the most basics of the weapons uses, how to wield the weapon as an extension of their self while utilizing the Force to help guide their actions.
Ranking Titles
Padawan
When an Initiate has graduated from the academy and has been accepted by a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master, they are now referred to as a Padawan and begin intensive one-on-one training with their Master. (If a padawan is under the tutelage of a Jedi Knight, the student still refers to his or her instructor as a Master, regardless of the Knight title, out of honor and respect).
It is during the years of training the student receives as a Padawan that the learner constructs their first lightsaber. It is a trial, a test. The Padawan is sent to locate their own crystals and other parts, which becomes a test of their currently learned skills and knowledge. Once the materials are found and the Padawan returns safely, he or she begins construction of their weapon.
Traditionally, a Human Padawan will grow a long strand of hair that is braided. This braided strand of hair is cut off during the promotional ceremony to Knight, when the Padawan becomes a Jedi Knight.
A Jedi may have only one apprentice at a time. Prior to accepting another, it is required that the current Padawan is promoted to the status of Knight.
Knight
This rank is the most common amongst the Jedi. The title is also used, mostly by non-Jedi, to refer to any member of the Order that has at least met the compulsory requirements of the Jedi Council. Jedi Knights are highly trained in the use of the Force and their choice of weapon is the lightsaber.
Knights are the Guardians of the Galaxy. They protect the general public from all threats, including wars. They are also used to settle disputes and contentions for ruler-ship because of their overall neutrality and ability to search out the truth through the Force.
In order to receive the promotion from Padawan to Knight, the disciplined student must complete a series of tests of their skills, knowledge, and dedication known as The Trials.
Occasionally, a Padawan would be called upon to perform an additional task or quest. This could take the form of solving a judicial case, providing aid to a citizen in need, or similar situations
In times of turmoil, the Trials could be bypassed at the discretion of the Jedi Council if the Padawan has shown great skill, courage, or dedication to the Jedi Order. In such cases the Padawan is considered to have passed the Trials through their actions, negating the need for formal testing.
The Trials
A series of tests given to Padawan's who are ready for promotion to Knight. These tests are administered by the Jedi Council.
Trial of Skill
This Trial usually consists of a lightsaber duel with either another person or a manifestation of the dark side. The Padawan must prove to be fully trained as a warrior, with the force and for defense and mastery of lightsaber combat.
Trial of Flesh
This Trial involves the Padawan overcoming great physical pain, hardship, or loss. It can also test the student's mastery of detachment from physical pleasure and from people.
Trial of Courage
To pass the this trial, a Padawan fights courageously in battle, completes a mission with a low chance of survival, or defeats a superior enemy.
Trial of Self
To pass this trial, the Padawan has to look deep within themselves, and see what they are truly made of. Often times, the Padawan did not like what they saw, and it could be a highly traumatic experience.
Two additional notable trials are usually undertaken in concert with these, as well.
Trial of Knowledge
This tests the Padawan's knowledge of the Jedi Code. This is usually done periodically throughout the Padawan's training with the Master asking the Padawan occasional questions until he/she had proven to the master a thorough understanding of the Jedi Code.
Trial of Lightsaber Construction
In this trial, the Padawan meditates with the Force and constructs his/her own lightsaber.
Knighting Ceremony
The Jedi Grand Master leading the Knighting would first place his or her lightsaber above the right shoulder, then the left shoulder, and then back to the right shoulder; removing the Padawan's braid in the process. The following phrase is said to the now Jedi Knight. "Step forward, Padawan. [Name of Padawan], by the right of the Council, by the will of the Force, I dub thee, Jedi (cuts braid) Knight of the Republic."
Master
This is the highest rank most Jedi can obtain and is a requirement for becoming a member of the Jedi Council. This rank is reserved for those who have shown exceptional devotion and skill in the Force.
After the Jedi Council has promoted a Padawan to the rank of Jedi Knight, the Padawan's teacher is usually promoted to the rank of Jedi Master. This is done under the proviso that the student passes The Trials. The Master can then choose another Initiate to take on as their Padawan.
Any Knight who has not taken a Padawan is not prevented from advancing to Master status. In this instance a Knight can re-take the trials to earn the rank, but these traisl are often much harder and involve additional tests on top of the tests already conducted during The Trials.
Though this is rare, the Jedi Council can grant a Knight Master status for performing an extraordinary deed or service. It is frowned upon by the Jedi Council for a Knight to assume the status of Master upon his or herself without the Jedi Council's approval.
Some Masters, perhaps those who are members of the Council, or those who are too old for missions, tutor Younglings or take care of other matters in the Jedi Order.
Council
When a Jedi Council Member vacates their seat, the Council looks for an exceptional Jedi Master to fill the empty position. Presiding Council members elect prospective candidates when openings become available. While there are no explicit ranks among the Jedi Council (as it is, at least theoretically, a conclave of equals), there are clear centers of authority.
Utaar Ruukun is regarded as the Council's senior-most member, or better known as the Grand Master, and Juro Hasekwa as his second. Some members aree permanent, or lifetime, members while the rest serve limited terms, after which they stepped down and another member is elected to the council.
Grand Master
Jedi Grand Master (or Supreme Master) is the title given to the acknowledged leader of the entire Jedi Order. Only the highest-ranking Jedi Masters take this title, although how exactly one earns it is unknown. The Grand Master is apparently the "first among equals" of the Jedi Council.
Specializations
Jedi Watchman
Jedi are often called upon to act as impartial diplomats. They serve as negotiators during disputes, and their judgments were often recognized as just and fair. When acting as diplomats, Jedi take the utmost care to be impartial and fair-minded.
Charged with overseeing a particular system or sector, thus serving as a type of liaison officer between the system or sector and the Jedi Council. Jedi Watchmen are often highly skilled in diplomacy and possess knowledge of the culture of the system or sector they oversee. Often Jedi Watchmen originate from the system or sector they are tasked with overseeing.
Jedi Investigator
Jedi investigators are specially appointed by the Jedi Council. Their primary objectives are to uncover hidden and obscure threats to the galaxy, such as powerful criminal syndicates, corruption and conspiracy against the Republic and other phantom menaces.
Jedi investigators are charged with rooting out the threats via their detective skills and reporting in to the Jedi Council, which would then decide what action to take. Jedi investigators usually operate in secrecy, the Council members being the only ones who knew about their missions.
A Jedi investigator often works alone undercover, infiltrating the organization under suspicion, and does not hesitate to use guile, deception or even brute force in addition to detective skills to achieve his or her goal. Working from within, Jedi investigators are often successful in neutralizing the enemy before galactic conflict could arise.
Jedi investigators also spy on known criminal syndicates, pirate groups, assassin organizations as well as individual criminals and report their findings to the Jedi Council, which keep detailed records of most known criminals in the galaxy.
Jedi investigators also are assigned less dangerous missions, such as helping identifying Force sensitive children to be trained in the ways of the Force, or solve criminal cases normal police forces were incapable of deciphering. This is not their primary task, but often they do it to train their observational skills.

Jedi Sniper
Members of the Jedi Order that act as defenders of the Jedi Temple. Contrary to the Jedi brutes, that rely on their physical strength to protect the Temple, the Jedi snipers have perfected the art of long-range lightsaber attacks, using saber throws to strike from long distances anyone who presents a threat to the headquarters of the Jedi Order.
Unlike most Jedi, Jedi snipers wield their lightsabers with a reversed grip.
