Personality

Opinionated and outspoken, it’s amazing Katryca hasn’t been killed yet. Growing up on a planet where it was acceptable, if not expected, to voice and argue an opinion, Katryca has yet to learn that an opinion (especially a wrong one) can be deadly. Due to this Katryca has learnt how to talk her way out of most situations, using her own brand of logic and odd sense of humour to get out of most situations. As long as she talks fast and acts dumb it generally gets her out of trouble.

Most people don’t realise how clever she is until they see her working. Never one to finish a job half-done Katryca’s dedication to her work and natural curiosity, she’ll do anything to ensure that any piece of machinery she gets her hands on works like a charm the minute she’s done with it. Katryca likes nothing more than to experiment with what she can do with an engine and whatever she can get her hands on at the time, generally creating a more efficient machine in the process. Like most Chandrilans she adores nature, yet prefers the concrete certainty of metal and wiring to grass and flowers. She finds it easier to deal with the logical predictability of a machine.

Having grown up in a small community, Katryca finds it easy to get along with people. Friendly and easy going she manages to make do on whatever planet she’s landed on, as long as there are ships and technology to fix, she’s happy wherever she is. She’s surprisingly tolerant of other species, considering them to be people to just with different appearances and customs. Her loyalty is assured once a person has proven themselves to be worthy of trust. Trust, as far as Katryca is concerned, can only be earned through really knowing someone. Katryca finds it hard to stay in one place for too long. Cursed with an insatiable wanderlust her natural curiosity to find out what’s on the other side of the next star system has made a wanderer out of her.

History

Young Katryca

Young Katryca

Born to Ferris and Hel d’Moreau, Katryca grew up in a small community on Chandrila. The youngest of two she was the miracle child given her parents already had a one year old son when she was born. As a child Katryca spent most of her time playing with her brother Kain and generally making a nuisance of herself around the community. Naturally curious she would explore even the most mundane buildings in the hopes of find something exciting around the corner. Her favourite game was to hide in sheds where the farmers kept their heavy equipment and have a look at what was going on inside the big machines. By the age of nine Katryca knew the community like the back of hand, having found her way into every building within a ten mile radius of her home. At school she was considered academically bright, if somewhat distracted. Unable to concentrate on what was considered a ‘good, proper’ education, Katryca soon fell into a habit of causing trouble when she was bored. Unlike her brother Kain, who was a model student, Katryca found herself being sent home from school on a regular basis.

She discovered her love for machinery when her father brought home a broken tractor to use on the farm. He intended to repair it for himself, yet seemed to be unable to find the problem. After being kicked out of school (again) for being a disruptive element, a bored Katryca decided to have a look at the broken machine in her fathers shed. She had no idea what she was doing, but they'd been shown what the inside of a properly working tractor looked like at school, it couldn't be that hard to try and get it looking like the picture from her school books. Five hours of completely random experimentation and an incredibly greasy dress later Katryca tested to see if she’d fixed the tractor. It worked. At first her surprised parents were shocked that their daughter had actually managed to fix the complex machine, let alone that she’d done so through random experimentation. Once both Hel and Ferris were convinced that their daughter, the one they’d never be able to control, they attempted to find someone who could nurture her gift.

Bannek Destari

Bannek Destari
That person was Bannek Destari, a mechanic passing on his way to Coruscant. Destari had done some work for one of the d'Moreau's neighbours and heard about the 'miraculous fixture' quite by chance. Disbelieving that a sixteen year old could actually fix something like a tractor by accident he went to Ferris and asked to speak to his daughter. Initially Destari wasn't impressed by the girl. She appeared to him to be easily distracted and generally bored with whatever was going on around her. Her interest only seemed piqued when machines were involved. When asked why she found machines os interesting she replied: "They're logical, if something isn't right it won't work properly. I like knowing how things work" So, to satisfy his own curiosity about Katryca's abilities Destari handed the girl a broken portable generator and asked her to do what she could to it. Watching her work, Destari realised that she must have known something about tractors before her miraculous experimentation worked. There was no denying the girl had a head for that kind of thing, but experimentation could only go so far. She had a long way to go before she'd be able to work properly. He hadn't had an apprentice in years and seeing a young person so interested in machines made him remember why he used to take them on. Before suggesting to Hel and Ferris that he take Katryca on as an apprentice, he asked Katryca herself what she thought of the idea. At first she was shocked at the idea of leaving all she knew behind her. However, when Destari explained that he believed with the right training she could go far, Katryca was all for the idea. Her parents weren't as agreeable. No one in their family had ever gone offworld and no one had done anything else but become farmers. Having a mechanic in the family would be going against traditions that spanned generations. Yet, they couldn't deny that Katryca wasn't cut out for farming. All she was managing to achieve while at home was a reserved seat in the head teachers office at her school. If anything Hel and Ferris agreed to the apprenticeship to see if it would make an honest woman of their troublesome daughter. So, Katryca packed her belongings, said goodbye to her parents and left Chandrila for Coruscant.

On Coruscant Destari taught Katryca all the basic knowledge she'd need to survive in the universe. He spent months teaching the young woman the different engine parts, types of tools, different engine classes, anything really that would help her in the field. Destari was a firm believer in learning by example, taking his apprentice to the lower levels of the city to show her some of the more exotic engine parts. He'd get Katryca to practice using the various tools of the trade on worn out machines that no one was ever likely to use again, only allowing her to use the tool on a real job if she'd mastered it on the practice job. Once Katryca was proficient in the main tools, Destari moved their training off Coruscant and into the field. He took her to the most extreme conditions managable, introduced her to some wierd and wonderful tools and parts that they'd never find on Coruscant. They spent six months on Tatooine working on racing pods, doing occasional droid repairs when the need for a working pod was low. They spent a few months working on freighters, doing minor wiring work to earn their way across the galaxy. Destari even insisted on teaching Katryca how to fix weapons in order to improve her work on a smaller scale. According to Destari you had to know when to hit something with a wrench, and when to use a soft touch. Destari may have been overdoing the fine skills training, but he was a practical man who knew how hard it was to find work in some places. He was a perfectionist and he wanted his apprentice to be able to get work after she'd finished training with him.

Katryca travelled and trained with Destari for a total of four years, following him across the galaxy to wherever they could find work. It was through Destari that Katryca was finally able to quench her insatiable curiosity, finally managing to prove herself in a field she was actually good at. At twenty Katryca left Destari to strike out on her own, hoping to make a name for herself. Ever since then she’s been travelling from planet to planet, hopping freighters and finding work wherever she can find it. Occasionally she bumps into Destari and travels with him again for old time’s sake for a few months before they grow sick of each others company and go their separate ways.
