History
Birth and Childhood
Kiden Mars was born on the fortress world of Anaxes. Known as the "Defender of the Galactic Core" and like most Anaxsi was born into a proud, strong family. Her father Danver was trained in in special operations and used that training, blended with a unique form of tracking and survivalist tactics to train future generations of black ops in the Republic. Though he never saw action thanks to a vicious injury that took sight from his left eye and made him limp, he was still considered one the best teachers in the Republic's special forces. Eden's mother was a banker when she and Danver met, starting as a teller and eventually working her way up to a more modest pay grade. Though the job did not provide for long as Kiden's most passed away around her ninth birthday.
As a child, Danver enjoyed showing Kiden various parts of his training program, at an early age she displayed an interest, but her mother wasn't fond of Eden learning such things. Danver showed her tracking when she was young, taking her along on frequent hunting trips where she put those skills to a test. She was of course unaware of what she was really learning, but took strongly to it.Most Anaxsi were relegated toward the military services in the Republic and the Mars family was no different in that regard. Eden attending primary school, Pols Anaxes had many fine schools to attend and Eden was enrolled in her mother's Alma Mater. Her time in school was well spent, she kept her head down and studied. Eden was not without her teenage troubles though, she often got into trouble a few times with her friends for various pranks on other students and sometimes on professors. She was an average student for the most part, her grades in literature and mathematics could have used improvement, but her sciences scored off the charts. During her early years in school she formed a friendship with Cerra Lorell.
ACDC
She graduated and almost immediately after joined in the Anaxes Core Defense Corps (ACDC) as a precursor to enlistment. In the ACDC on Anaxes, Eden was quickly disciplined, a very strict code ruled the ACDC and it was an exclusive club for those who joined. Her wild streak, whatever was there to begin with, was quickly stomped out by the instructors at the Defense Corps. She was an obedient soldier despite not being the daughter of a wily man. Since many of the professors there knew her father she earned the nickname 'Dead-eye's Daughter'. As Eden became more adept to the workings of the officer side of being a soldier, she grew in cadet ranks, but was often beaten out by her friend Cerra Lorell. This led to a a friendly competition between the two, with Cerra often the victor. After so long in Cerra's shadow, animosity grew between them and they grew apart during their time in the ACDC.
After her falling out with Cerra, Eden isolated herself for the most part. The young Mars cadet was demoted when she took it upon herself during a simulation to usurp power from their cadet platoon leader and lost a chance at salutatorian.
The Defense Corps was for all intensive purposes, a reserve force charged with the defense of the core worlds, in particular Coruscant. So during a time a peace in core the ACDC was mostly just a government expense, but Anaxes had a long tradition that it valued. Eden and her fellow graduates returned home for weeks at a time, spending less time on a military base than would be the norm. During her time off, she spent it with her father improving her skills in hunting and tracking. It was quickly becoming her dream to join special forces. Having already proven she was no career officer, she sought to be a career soldier. Kiden took to the tracking side extremely well, not a terrific marksmen she could still get the job done. She and Danver often took trips (during their down time) to nearby Axum to hunt the wild game. Though they used non-lethal means the result was still the same.
Republic Military
And so with her father's recommendations she joined the Republic Military. Due to prior training in military disciplines the boot camp that Kiden attended was not as hard for her as it would have been without the ACDC. Still it didn't come without it's challenges, as cadet squad leader she was often to critical of her fellow cadets and lost favor with the professors and was demoted. Scolded by her superiors for her differing opinions, she was twice threatened with expulsion from the academy. In order to prove her worth Kiden changed her attitude to that of a more agreeable soldier if for nothing else a career in the Republic militia. Part of her also wanted to shove it into the faces of her trainers, whom Kiden mistakenly believed she could learn nothing from. For the second time she'd ruined an opportunity with her attitude to rank among the top graduates so she was quickly inducted into a small unit based on the frigid world of Toola. Kiden expected she wouldn't be going far from this point, disappointed in herself, she begrudgingly went on through the day to day patrols like a security officer on the beat. However her unit was called in to settle a riot that had gotten out of hand in the industrial sector on close by Nam Chorios. When local forces were unable to quell the rioters, her group was sent as secondary aid. However the workers had already grown beyond control and Kiden's major had authorized use of stun weapons. This did not do much for them, the workers kept coming and in large numbers as protesters joined in. Led on by the local representative of the Galactic Union of Worker's Guilds and the foreman the riots turned for the worse as security forces and civilians were trampled and attacked.
Kiden recognized this, rallying her platoon despite only being a lieutenant they followed behind her. Eden's captain became incapacitated after he lost most of his mobility in a beating thanks to members of the Union. She led them through the sewer systems to a building close enough to mount an attack on the foreman and Union representative. Having their best marksmen climb atop a large building, they managed to take out the foreman who stood in plain sight mustering the rioter's spirit. The Union representative facing jail time ran to the local spaceport to escape in light of the confusion. But Kiden had anticipated this from the very start; using the foreman's death as a means to flush him out there was a local security force waiting at the station to arrest him. Kiden nicknamed this move of misdirection the 'Kuat City Shuffle'.
Bright Future
Afterwards with her major's blessing and the notice of Republic military leaders she left her unit for bigger and better things. Though not promoted, she was moved to a more active platoon where she would continue to see combat experience. After her move to her new unit she climbed the ranks to major through similar displays of excellence and it was decided she would be moved to a more advanced operations company. Republic generals thought it best to integrate her into a special forces platoon and so she was moved from the normal army into a different group.
Here she found only tough, hardened soldiers. Unlike her previous units where her peers were sentients of all different kinds, some with military in their futures, others doing it only for the grant for school; this group was comprised of only career soldiers. Eden was out of place for her first few months among the black operations squad, but it wasn't long before she found a groove with the commanding officer and her peers. They saw action Kiden was never allowed to speak of on worlds she could never mention doing what was left of the Republic's dirty work. But they were quickly becoming obsolete in a corrupt system. However this would soon change.
A Change of Pace
With the rise of the Empire there was a shake up in the military arm. Most of her group were not opposed as they held no real allegiances, save Kiden and her commanding officer. Her commander disliked the change and had no desire to follow orders from Imperial High Command. Kiden and her peers began to notice this and things quickly took a turn for the worse. So Kiden being loyal to the Empire and especially it's ideal, sought to change this. Behind her commanders back she went above his head to the general that assigned their missions. Despite his anger over Kiden's insubordination by going over the commander's head, he offered her a deal. If she could bring in her Colonel, then she as second in command would assume the role of command. Eden agreed and quickly went to work subverting his command by revealing his disloyalty to her company.
But her commander was not fool, Colonel Bracen went rogue and disappeared after killing a member of their group during a mission to Bellassa during the first months of the Empire. To her chagrin, Kiden was ordered to capture him and then she would receive her promotion. And so she called upon her father's teachings of hunting, and chased Bracen across Bellassa during a period of civil unrest. Bracen was attempting to lead the locals against Minister Bishop Xinge's forces having already made contact and established trust somehow, Kiden found herself cut off soon after. But Eden's frustration only fed her desire to capture Bracen, knowing a promotion to Colonel awaited her. Bracen was smart, but Kiden was just as smart.Bracen had some of the locals form a militia and had taken up refuge inside an abandoned warehouse sector on Bellassa, where Kiden planned to storm and capture all inside. Her thinking was that with some of the best trained soldiers under her command against only Bracen and farmers she would be victorious. But Bracen was accustomed to her methods and even her infamous Kuat City shuffle so by the time Eden stormed the suspected base of operations it was empty. But Bracen was not prepared yet to ambush Kiden, as he knew what Kiden knew to be true. His soldiers weren't soldiers. So still at a major disadvantage he fled. It was six days until Kiden pinned Bracen down. After a firefight ensued and Bracen's militia retreated and left him Eden had Bracen where she wanted. But the rogue soldier was not prepared to spend his time in an Imperial prison, instead he committed suicide. The result was still the same Kiden would be Colonel, but she willfully tracked down the rest of the rebels that joined Bracen and captured those that didn't fight back.
The captured were transported to prisons and Kiden was promoted to Colonel and given command of her squad. She had changed a great deal since her tenure among the Anaxes Core Defense Corps and for the better in her mind. A dedicated Imperial and an even more dedicated soldier, she has a bright future among the halls of the Empire...
Personality
Kiden has a cold, abrasive attitude. She is often known as having a hard-ass mentality or accused of being a company woman, her reputation among her superiors has become somewhat of a mixed review. Kiden is unforgiving and very intolerant of failure and insubordination (at least towards her), sometimes admonishing those in her charge for simple offenses. She expects the best of those around her, but underneath is a concerned leader as evidenced by her years as a cadet squad leader. Kiden's high expectations are often misconstrued -- mostly to her own fault -- as she simply wishes for her squad to survive. However this has not always been the case with Kiden, though a Imperial supporter she was not always pleased with the tactics of it's previous incarnation the Galactic Republic. Often she argued with superiors over their course of action, leading to some trouble toward the wanning months of the Republic.Despite being a devoted follower of the Emperor, Kiden is not averse to bending the rules to fit the situation. Though she was very often one-track when it came to getting a mission done (by any means necessary) Eden sometimes altered parameters to adapt to unforeseen complications, sometimes abandoning the primary objective all together. This could possibly be the reason why she never advanced from a single black-ops platoon and given control of more soldiers despite her rank. However she has never gone far enough to be reprimanded or received any consequences. Kiden is by no means a loose cannon, she has been commended for her actions in saving her platoon with quick thinking.
Eden is not trusting of most, rarely revealing private details of her life before the military even those close to her. She calls very few people 'friend' due to her lack of willingness to get close to anyone she has developed no relationship beyond that of acquaintance at least it is so in her eyes. The Colonel often ponders her lonely predicament, sometimes thinking of changing her attitude, but is usually bothered by the company of others so she rarely acts on such thoughts. Even in the presence of her platoon she rarely endeavors to strike up conversation instead keeping up the facade of an emotionless commander. Some animosity has formed between herself and the echelons of Imperial command formerly Republic due to her foul demeanor, though she has yet to see repercussions from her malcontent. This should not be mistaken for malice toward those above her, just her general personality is found to be too caustic for many.
The Colonel is a strong believer in the Imperial ideal, ruling the galaxy as she has commanded her squad with an iron fist. An advocate of firm rule she has enjoyed the government transition and rebukes those resistant to the change as terrorists and criminals. Her view in this regard has become very black and white, leading to a vanguard sort of position in among the Imperial generals. Her one track mentality in that interest has made her often first choice for duty that will be known to encounter situations known to be hazardous.
Despite her position often asserting the need to choose who lives and dies, Kiden is not without hesitation in some situations. Because she and her team rely on stealth to be effective, she is sometimes faced with killing witnesses which she must postulate for the survival of her mission and company. The woman has often questioned herself in positions that dictate such action and long after. However Kiden has not trouble in ending the lives of enemy combatants as she is a soldier by profession. She understands that in battle it is kill or be killed and thus has earned quite a kill count in her tenure as a black operations commander. She is never one to push the duty along to another not afraid to get her hands dirty in both the figurative sense and the literal. Kiden has often remarked she dislikes those commanders who are tentative to. Due to her position in black operations, Kiden's strongest skills include espionage, subterfuge, and manipulation. She was no stranger to deception and especially misdirection, often using what she called the "Kuat City Shuffle" to distract while she completed her job.Kiden isn't without a softer side, off-duty she has been known to show comradery with her platoon and enjoys a drink or two with them in celebration. She does not however ever cross the distinct line between commander and soldier, instead is usually the first to assert it among her mostly male accompaniment. Still even while off duty she isn't prone to smiles and jokes, ever the serious one she distances herself in this way. Her hobbies were few outside of duty, but they included (in her youth on Pols Anaxes) hunting and hiking, as well as a few other outdoor activities. Now she mostly enjoys music in her off time, or opting to sit in brooding thought.
