Nesota Interview

Every character you have played have either been an Imperial or went over to the Imperial side - in Max's case. What do you find most appealing about playing this type of character?

Well, it really depends on the kind of character I’m playing. If I take Nesota as an example she’s very appealing because she considers herself to be a US Soldier fighting for freedom in the Galaxy and compares the opposition to be the Taliban trying to create chaos and disorder. It’s just interesting to see her mixed view on the entire situation and just the thought of how this will evolve is appealing.

What got you into role playing?

Well, it’s actually a very funny story which will probably give Kieran the necessary creepy flashbacks. My original preference always went out to Star Trek Role-playing and I always made up stories with friends of mine in which we imagined to be big important Starfleet Admirals. One day I stumbled across a play-by-email RPG called “USS Firewall” which took place in an alternate timeline in which the Federation had lost the Dominion War (the Trekkies amongst us probably know what I’m talking about). Anyway, when I joined I was looking to chat with other people with the same interests and accidentally stumbled into the chat room of Star Wars Unleashed.

Good old Star Wars Unleashed… I was a very hormonal teen back then and the mix of that and using Denise Richards as an avatar turned out to be a bad combination and my first Star Wars character died without me ever having written more than a word… rest in peace, Ensign Masterson…

Well, I admit I made an awful lot of embarrassing mistakes during my time at Star Wars Unleashed and Star Wars Visions (call it inexperience) and I basically ruined my popularity within the Star Wars Role-playing world because of those mistakes. It did taught me the necessary netiquette though and when Gillian Strannyx (better known as Alena Agrona at SWE) left SWV in October ’06 after an argument with the lead admins she decided to take me with her to “a better place” called SWE. I guess that was when I really started getting into serious Role-playing.

What do you envision for the future of your characters?

Well, I can’t really give accurate answers to that question so I’ll just share my hopes and dreams about Maxwell and Nesota.

Maxwell’s story has always been somewhat of a soap. He was originally created to be the pilot of the Imbroglio but I never really got into the spin of things so he quickly descended into inactivity (a.k.a. gambling, drinking and making foul promises). After an accident Lanaan Kutsiri comes into his life and together they come across various life/death situations which were sometimes direct spin-offs from action movies.

Unfortunately, the woman of his life disappeared as fast as she had appeared to him after another incident which resulted in Maxwell becoming an ISB Investigator. I envision the future Maxwell as a little crazy and twisted, trying to hunt down Lanaan in his frantic attempts to protect her from outside influences and even from herself. I don’t know how I will write him after the confrontation with Mr. and Mrs. Nirn, but we’ll see what happens. Maybe I’ll talk with Bavo (Talos’ writer and a good friend of mine outside SWE) and discuss the possibility of Maxwell dying in a fierce fight with Talos on top of a cliff… in heavy rain and with heavy thunderstorms, both wielding vibroswords and Maxwell wearing his ISB Uniform… *sighs* But like I said… that’s just future talk. :-D

Nesota is harder to predict than Maxwell though. She grew up on a very anti-feministic planet and everyone who ever mentioned the word “Nesota” to me over AIM know all the details of her biography (both listed and not listed). Those small details gave her some serious (but understandable) emotional scars and she has many, many ghosts of the past that are still haunting her. The infamous “Operation: Iron Bantha” also haunts her and she still holds herself (and her already court-martialed Commanders) responsible for the death of General Rylan Voru and Gol Crossback’s fisherman frenzy in the streets of Ahto City. While that last incident on Manaan definitely pushed Nesota’s professionalism to new levels of frantic fanaticism she still has a lot of ghosts to put at ease but I’m afraid it will take quite some time before Nesota will manage to do so and move on with her life. No, I really cannot envision a future Nesota but I expect some serious confrontation between her and her new Commanding Officer, 1st Lieutenant Arvra Rosaro. She really can’t stand the fact she is replaced by a pilot but she’ll hopefully use that frustration to become a better Military Officer.

What do you find to be the biggest challenge in writing a female character?

Romantic interaction. You can see it in every female character I’ve written so far. Colonel Jessica Karren pushed everyone away with her cold demeanor and Nesota has enough emotional scars to push everyone away out of fear for getting hurt.

If you could write with any other character on the board, who would it be and why? (please exclude Jonam and Lanaan from this answer).

Hmm, that’s a tough one because there are so many great writers in SWE… well, if I really have to choose I’d really like to write with Tara’s character Rhiara D’Loroc. I mean, Nesota is a very curious person that really wants to know what would drive someone so desperate that they would take up arms and try to fight a suicidal fight against the most powerful people in the Galaxy. From what I know of Rhiara she also prefers talking to violence so I guess the hardest battle of SWE (In my opinion) would start when those two ever meet and start talking about that subject.

Is there any other type of character you’d like to play other than a Imperial human?

…Wait, do you mean I am allowed to play characters other than Imperial humans? Tais told me that I was only allowed to play those characters until I’d upgrade my account to premium membership by sending him 50 bucks…

What of you own qualities and personal quirks have you added to you characters?

Well, I don’t have a very advanced answer to this in regards to Maxwell. He can be a total nut at times but is very fierce when provoked. Let it be clear that I’m totally no racist at all but should I be in Maxwell’s shoes I think I would feel dominant towards the alien races as well, just not in the way he feels it.

Nesota… she’s a pacifist for military standards. She’s too curious for her own good and prefers talking above violence. She really has her heart in the right place but is, like Maxwell, very fierce when the lives of friends and loved ones are in danger.

Like I said, it’s not the most detailed answer ever but those are the major qualities and quirks I share with Maxwell and Nesota.

Who do you consider an influence for your writing, famous or otherwise?

Well, it depends on the character. In my Maxwell mood it had always been Lanaan who inspired and influenced me into writing my posts… and if Lanaan didn’t inspired me enough she always had the “big bad leather belt of slapping” which really was surprisingly effective if it came to inspiring me.

For Nesota… well, in my Nesota mood I really never considered anyone an influence until Xae’s writer created Arvra Rosaro (the new Commanding Officer of C-Company). Nesota is so very frustrated about being replaced by a pilot but since Arvra outranks her she cannot speak up so those two are in for some serious confrontation in the near future… confrontation and conflicts of those type always inspire me to write for Nesota. :-D

Tell us a little bit about the person behind Nes and Max.

Well, I’m Ramon, a 19-year old Dutch apprentice sailor aboard the German pushing barge Herkules IX. I won’t go very deep into that subject because it’s something I can keep talking about for hours and I don’t want to bore you guys. I’m working together with a multinational crew made up from Dutch, German and Czech people. Because of that multinational crew I speak three languages (Dutch, English and German) and am currently learning a fourth one (Czech). While I really love my job and the family-like feeling aboard the ship I’m only planning on working there until I’m muscular enough to join the Dutch Police Force, my real passion.

…allright, I was joking. I’m a computer program created by the Dutch Government to spy on the internet and disable it the moment we launch our attack on the rest of the world! >:-D

What would you say to inspiring writers trying to get into their first character on SWE?

Alright, first off: There is no such thing as a premium membership!

Seriously though… experiment a little. When I just created Nesota I also needed a while to find the style I wanted so just write a little and experiment with different styles. You’ll eventually find the style you like and just go from there.
