Appearance

Character Avatar: Hayden Christiensen
Tall and fair, Raken's youthful demeanor often towers above his company, raising to a full extended stance of six feet, four inches. Altogether, he is a large, straight-backed individual; and already after the years as an Apprentice, his previously thin and almost lanky form is beginning to fill out with muscular undertones. His young, reclusive face is washed over by a milky fair hue, framed by a head of dirty blonde hair that has been trimmed to fit the traditional Jedi Padawan mold, much to his displeasure. His thick-socketed, wide orbs of emerald eyes are always searching for something to lock onto, something to gaze upon, or something to study with intent.

He carries himself boldly and brashly in his dark, earthen brown Jedi robes; always flexing to his full height and keeping his chin raised high as he walks, portraying a headstrong, virile, determined, and perhaps even cocky young Jedi.

Personality

Despite his late and sudden thrusting into the world of a Jedi Apprentice which has caused him to develop a stray rogue train of thought (much to the discretion of the older masters), Raken is not without his own sense of serious, almost brooding determination. This also doesn't leave him without his own personal twang of bold, witty sarcasm to those who have cracked the tough outer shell of his personality.

Yet on most occasions, Raken's childhood has carried through to his actions today. He is often a very reserved individual with very few words, and his stray emotional attachment to the people of his pre-Jedi lifestyle have caused him to take on an aire of quiet, melancholy, brooding, and almost mysterious contemplation.

Background

Raken Stormrider first knew existence in the Outer Rim outpost known as Odessa, a colony system suspended in space which has acted as both a harbor and safe haven for mercenaries, bounty hunters, galactic scum, general passerby, and those simply not wishing to be found for years since its construction. However, his true roots are even more shrouded in mystery, as he first came to Odessa Outpost as an orphaned infant in the hands of caretakers, hailing from an unknown planet filled with unknown civil strife. It is rumored that his homeplanet was once home to a massive internal civil war during his birth 20 years prior, and that Raken as a child was one of the many refugees from this conflict, adopted at the age of three by faux parents acting in service to the galaxy. His foster parents, Aldar and Tarsha Boda, raised him in their secure apartment aboard Odessa Outpost ever since. Although Raken had, at numerous times asked his legal guardians to shed light on his true origins, neither of them conceded to tell him the full story, merely saying that he was abandoned as a child by unknown parents and put into an adoption program, where he then came into the care of the Boda couple.

This obscurity towards his origins caused uneasiness within Raken at a young age, eventually drawing him to live out a reclusive childhood. The boy would oftentimes spend entire days housed within his modest quarters alone, fully engaged in various hobbies in an attempt to find himself. What activities he didn't do by himself usually involved his father. Aldar Boda was a low-wage freighter pilot; and although his line of work forced the family into the rather impoverished conditions aboard Odessa Outpost, he often enlisted the young Raken to his aid on many freighter convoys. As a result, Raken had a chance to see from one end of the galaxy to the other, and developed an inner calling for adventure and intrigue, which was only heightened by his missions with his father that sprang him from his lonesome home of Odessa.

While most of the other young, impoverished children of the Outpost never empathized with or accepted the strange, recluse of Raken, he managed to confide in one true childhood friend known as Lani. A neighbor aboard the outpost, the two grew closer when the boy defended Lani against a group of unscrupulous teasing children, although it resulted in his own defeat at the lesser end of a fistfight. Nevertheless, the two shared a special bond of friendship that lasted throughout their adolescence, and as they aged, Raken's feelings for her began to increase, although he never outright displayed them, instead choosing to bottle them up for fear of losing the friendship.

Meanwhile, as a teenager, the freighting escapades with his father had taught him a great deal about piloting. It wasn't long before Raken was promoted to a stand-in pilot for his father's craft, rather than heaving boxes of freight which had been his job until then. On the days when he was home with his family on Odessa, he dreamed of seeing the stars again behind a pilot's chair, or being surrounded by the lush atmosphere of a new, unseen world. Then, while he was in space as his father's "apprentice", he dreamed of the day he would return home to see Lani. As he grew towards maturity, he also grew tired of the impoverished, lowlife surroundings of Odessa Outpost, where crime was heavy and money was scarce. It had affected all of the families who made their home there, including Lani's. His secretive passion for her made him yearn for a day where he could be able to escape with her to some far-off world, to forge a new living with Lani at his side, away from the slums of their upbringing. He knew she, along with many others there, deserved a better living, and after seeing families in shambles on Odessa for so long, he made a strong resolution to somehow change it.

Eventually, he got his chance- or something close to it. By the time he was 18, dissent had already been sown in the Old Republic, and various Separatist splinter groups had already begun to gain power and unify throughout the galaxy. One such group known as the Techno Union, secretly holding alliegance to the Sinister Six, wished to sieze the widely unknown Odessa Outpost and turn it into a home in space for further operations. The Jedi caught wind of this motive by intercepting a coded transmission, and informed the Republic immediately. However, the Republic, being chided by the invisible hand of the Six, only decided to send a small garrison of forces to defend, citing that the Techno Union was "weak, and should be easily disposed of". A small, collaborative effort between Jedi and Republic was formed to thwart the Techno Union move, and a Republic ambassador was sent to Odessa Outpost to inform the population of the impending attack. The ambassador, knowing the Techno Union forces were larger than had been predicted, urged any pilot-capable young men to take up arms and defend Odessa from their invaders. Raken, barely 18, foolhardily volunteered, both to feed his adventurous nature, as well as seeing his first opportunity to make a difference.

Aboard one of the few spare Jedi Starfighters that the Jedi had provided, Raken sailed out into space for his first real taste of action. His piloting skills learned from childhood on proved invaluable for the Jedi-Republic cause, and although the Techno Union forces were indeed more massive than declared, the Republic successfully thwarted the attack despite some losses. The incompetent automated droid pilots, though strong in number, were of little match against human pilots, and Raken's skills shone through, despite his relatively green mistakes during the battle. The battle was a victory, and all pilots, including Raken, were hailed as heros throughout the Outpost. It seemed as though Raken had found his true calling and had finally upstaged the uncomfortable lone-wolf days of his childhood, yet his destiny was to take a different path.

Raken's squadron leader, a Jedi Master known as Tahmet Korr, noted the Force abilities in Raken, which seemed to heighten his rather average piloting abilities. Tahmet was a wise Jedi, and knew that the Jedi ranks were dwindling and losing their power with every passing day. He knew that the Jedi were in need of any allies they could find, and saw exceptional potential in young Raken who had grown up unnoticed in the backwater colony of Odessa. It was because of these reasons, that despite Raken's old age, Master Korr told the young man of his abilities and urged him to join the Jedi ranks. After contemplating, Raken conceded, deciding to join the Jedi out of a desire to do good, and to abolish the lifestyles of those in the galaxy who were akin to the crime infested wasteways of Odessa Outpost. However, at the same time, he would have to leave all he had come to know and love behind; his family and Lani.

After sharing one last private moment with his best friend, Raken could still not bring himself to reveal his true feelings for her. Holding back the anguish of having to say goodbye to her forever, he instead made a vague promise, "I'll return. Someday."

He was now a Jedi.
