Character Information
Character Name: Sorom Jerel
Titles and or Nicknames: The Finder. He has a knack for finding targets for a price.
Affiliation Unaffiliated (Black Sun).
Age: 37
Relatives: As described, none of relevance.
Overall Appearance: Though typically he is well covered, Sorom is almost six foot two, and weighs around 170 pounds. His eyes are brown and his hair dark brown or black depending on the person you ask. His skin is light, or perhaps pale as some call it. with a fair complected skin. In public he is usually working and wearing the tools of his trade, however in private and quiet times he is apt to be dressed more casually, loose tunics or light trousers offset by baggy shirts and comfortable shoes.
As a kid he was sometimes teased for the size of his nose and that self consciousness eventually led him to first grow his hair a little shaggy, then last resort to masks or other face coverings. To this day he still is defensive about the size of his nose when he receives comment on it.
Character Avatar:Snake Eyes from GI Joe & Adrian Brody (when umasked).
Personality: There are cliched killers, assassins, and criminals. Outwardly Sorom may fit this profile of cliche to some, but to the discerning eye he is nothing of the sort. He believes in loyalty to himself and to money. Once he commits to that price, his word is his bond until the job is done. He will not abandon a job until such time as its completed and payment is received.
At times he finds it a challenge to battle one on one with his targets, he feels it only fair to give them a fighting chance. Its like a sport to him and it gives him a sense of accomplishment when he completes a mission. This is not a regular practice though because typically discretion is the better part of valor and he prefers to do what has to be done without drawing a lot of unneeded attention. If the chance arises though when he's cornered a target in an isolated or deserted location, he will try.
His mission is not to cause random damage to people. Hurting a bystander may be necessary to carry out a job, but his goal is to eliminate his target strictly and singularly without collateral damage. He takes no additional pride in torture or cruel and unusual practice. Hits are simply a job and no more. Extreme violence only enters the picture if absolutely required.
Sorom enjoys life, despite his profession. He understands the circle of life quite well and knows that sometimes it takes a strong person to interrupt the natural cycle of progression. Quiet endeavors suits him more than anything else, reading, expanding his mind, the opera, intellectual pursuits, even if he doesn't get to discuss them with others very often.
He has a sense of humor, one that could even be viewed as tacky or low brow. As he's squeezed the trigger on his X-45 sniper rifle more than once he's made off colour remarks about his target and their species, or how fat they might be among other derogatory descriptors. He's not overly charming, but he is at least civil, when not on the job, if work finds him, all manners were out the window.
History: Birth, childhood, teenager, adult. That would be the normal progression for the majority of people in the universe, but not for Sorom Jerel. Sorom came from a mother and father, just like everyone else. One of three children, the other two being younger sisters.
What made him different though was that from a young age he wore the expectations of a family. Not the family of mother, father, and sisters, but the expectations of THE family known as Black Sun.
Soroms father Sellron was a skilled assassin for the crime group, and at the age of 10 Sorom began to learn his fathers trade. First shooting, then stealth, then how to kill someone. There were other skills he learned in that time, but each of those facets were the primary tenets of his fathers teachings. Each were their own major, to turn a phrase.
He was a solid student, eager to please his father in learning his own job even if as a teen he did not comprehend the full effects of the things he was in training to do later in life.
To join the Black Sun was to commit for life. You didn't join as a first job or just for a little while. In for a penny, in for a pound as the old proverb went. Sorom was in for a pound and then some from the time he was a teen.
For several years as a child, a teen really, his father used Sorom as a lookout, a point man, or simply as bait to get to the target. Sorom, as with most children, believed and trusted in his father never to put him in harms way. Never being one to look into the past, he has never gone back and judged his fathers actions, nor considered whether his father put him in harms way or not.
Outside his fathers training, he lived a rather mundane life as a child. He and his sisters were home schooled by their mother Ballas. His sisters, Aleya & Miskyl, were both better students than he was. He had the physical gifts of his fathers trade, but that was the extent of his ability to excel. Being intellectually the inferior of his sisters drove him to try to be better read and more informed than they, even if it was a futile pursuit.
As he grew however his father finally began to allow the teen to take the shot, in this area he was in his element. His father was always there with another rifle, ready to clean up if the boy missed, but if Sorom could do anything well it was shoot. A natural calm permeated his very soul, it dripped from his every pore. The boy was born to be a killer. He had no particular predication towards flying or piloting, and it was clear he was a wreck when it came to the opposite sex, but the skills required to be a good assassin were perfected at an early age and came quite naturally to him. He was almost 17 when he made his first official kill, and he had never seen his father more proud.
By the time he was twenty, Sorom was a full fledged contract killer for Black Sun. It wasn't the kind of group that had summer picnics or spent a lot of time hanging out with one another, but on occasion he did work with other members of the guild in order to complete some of the more complex assignments. This was not a favorite past time for Sorom, but it was a required part of the job for a young assassin. Initially he bristled at this requirement, feeling the training his father gave him was more than adequate, but in time he accepted the things learned because of the new point of view introduced by each new partner.
Some of these partners accepted him warmly, like a family friend. Some he even knew from his time growing up, but many were new to him and he attempted to keep them at arms length and only learn what little they had to offer him that his father had not. However some of these partners were not as welcoming to Sorom, causing him much anguish over the fact that he had not earned his stripes in the same way others had. Sorom did not think he had been given any special treatment in achieving his new role, but it pained him to be viewed as anything but legitimate.
There was little he could do about it though, other than perform his missions.
It was during these missions he learned the last part of being a good assassin, setting a price. Black Sun was a group you were part of, but also something you could never completely be a part of when they viewed you as hired help, so you might as well get as much money as possible from the assignments when you could. It wasn't that he had some sort of price scale, but inevitably he could argue a point for more money than the initial offer might be.
All good craftsmen knew what it would cost to track and kill someone and this was one of the few things his father neglected to teach him, but he learned and learned well when he was grossly underpaid on some early assignments.
By the time he learned this lesson and settled into his life he was in his early twenties. By his late twenties he was getting more and more solo assignments, and by the time he reached his early thirties he was among the most counted on assassins Black Sun used.
At this point the politics of the galaxy became impossible to ignore, even for an assassin and before he knew it the leader of Black Sun left to take over as the Emperor and he was left unsure of the Families future. He was confident that one of the Vigos would take the reigns, perhaps even the Vigo he worked for most often, I'llspar Ree'an.
The change was exciting for certain, many many new jobs cropped up and his bank account grew as a result. He hoped Josdon wouldn't bring too much peace, peace was bad for business.
Unfortunately the change was also bad for family. Soroms father was killed, likely a result of the years and years of carrying out the dirty deeds of Edwis Josdon. His mother too was killed in the attack on their home on Corfai. His sisters, by this time having married and moved offworld were spared and still alive when he last tried to contact them. His life and his preference more solitary than communal left him with little interest in the lives of the sisters whom he still held some jealousy towards.
NPC: Vigo I'llspar Ree'an, a twilek who is his direct boss.
