The Big List of Cliches
From An Evolution in RP :: Database
Common Clichés
The following is a list of some of the over used cliches that are often encountered when creating a character in the realm of Star Wars RPG.
Parents killed by the evil government
In this example your character was away at school, or perhaps already grown up and moved away from home, only to return home to discover their parent[s] had been killed by the wicked government du jour. Your character then vows to join the resistance to the wicked government and get revenge for the death of their parents by any means necessary.
Raised them self on the streets of Coruscant -or other seedy planet
For this scenario your character was orphaned, or perhaps tied to the first example and had their parents killed, and they took to the streets becoming a pick pocket or the like in order to support them self.
Became leader of gang or criminal group at young age
Again this one can be related to the previous example. They became a pick pocket at a young age, then steadily worked their way up the crime ladder until when they were ridiculously young they took over their gang or crime organization.
Grew up rich and had it all
Your character grew up in a huge mansion as the child of aristocracy. They had servants to attend to their every need and as a result grew up arrogant and having everything and now inherited the vast fortune of their mother and father.
Was royalty of some sort
Not unlike the previous example, the character here was the son or daughter of the leader of a planet or system.
Traumatized by event that they can't remember/Amnesia
Flesh out your childhood, don't use the cliche of trauma or amnesia to avoid figuring out your past.
Graduated Top of the Class
In this example your character took to knowledge easily and adapted and picked up things better than his fellow classmates or his siblings or both. He advanced through school at an accelerated rate and completed university years ahead of those in his age group would normally be expected to graduate.
You Know You Want Me
Everyone can't be the prettiest person in the room. Avoid this one like the pretty girls in class avoided you.
Help, I've been kidnapped!!
Another big bad evil thing picking on little ol' you. It's been done about 7 zillion times.
The Badass Factor
You know this character. They have the biggest guns and the fastest ship and the coolest gadgets. The male characters are 6 foot 9 and all muscle. The women have breasts the size of Kansas and funky colored streaks in their hair while beating up every man in sight. It's tired and overdone. Everyone loves a villain with depth, not superficial comic book types.
Now, don't think you can't use these things, but understand you need to think it out quite well. These are all crutches for not developing a good character.
