Vyse Interview
From An Evolution in RP :: Database
1. How did you get started as a roleplayer?
Same as everybody I guess, didn't get enough attention from the opposite sex in high school. But in all seriousness I don't really remember. I was probably about thirteen or so, found a board accidentally, tried it out and I was terrible at it. The place was more free form and I was all about combat and I ended up just peeving a lot of people off with my immaturity. Then a few years passed by, I learned a few things, realized it was pretty much the same thing as writing a book, only with a butt-load of other people who were better than me and helped me come up with ideas I never would have came up with before. After that I guess I was kind of hooked. Been at it about six or so years now off and on and I don't really see myself stopping any time soon.
2. You have some really unique characters, could you tell us about each of them?
You may have to censor some of this. Vyse Toraez is an asshole who is destined (if I manage to pull this off right) to become a hero. Someone who is currently doing all the right things for all the wrong reasons, but in some distant day his motives will change. Tolan Rease is the polar opposite of Vyse. He's from a family of well to do politicians and saw all the back dealings that went along with that lifestyle and opted for the military, and because of this tends to see the galaxy in black and white. First and foremost though he's a father who loves his two daughters deeply and supports the Empire because he sees it as the best way to protect his children and give them a safe future. And then there is Kaldroa, my Ryn chef. I like to see him as two people, a complete jerk in the kitchen (a la or whatever the word is Gordon Ramsay), but a free spirit outside of it who is just going from planet to planet looking for more work and more recipes, and most importantly more adventure, and living every day to the fullest with as little regrets as possible.
3. Did you put part of yourself into your characters, how?
Well I think we all put a part of ourselves into our characters, but I think most of the times its the minimal parts of me or sometimes parts I wish I had that goes into mind. Vyse for example acts the way I would like to act with rude customers and telling them to sod off (well, I wouldn't say that....I'm not British....huh...neither is Vyse though...weird), but I guess I like my job too much....wow that sounds weird too. Next customer I get I'm telling them to screw off. Tolan has that sense of certainty and badassness that I wish I possessed, and I also gave him my worse nightmare and gave him two daughters, because I'm sure I'd be that dick dad that all the other school boys warned each other about in that case. And Kal just thoroughly enjoys life almost no matter what the time or situation and always appreciates it, which I wish I could do too, but often don't like I should. Oh, also all my characters smoke and drink like I do....that always seems to happen, when I first made Vyse he was supposed to be a non-smoker....think that lasted about three posts...oh well, live and learn.
4. You are definitely one of the funniest writers on the board, where does that inspiration come from?
Really? Huh....I did not know that. I don't know, I guess my sense of humor comes from a lot of what I read and watch. I'm a pretty big Joss Whedon fan, so that means I'm a pretty big Buffy, Angel, and Firefly fan. And if you read anything he writes that man is a god at witty and humor filled dialog, I like to think, hell I like to hope, he's rubbing off on me or something. Other than that though its just years of watching cartoons, the Simpsons, Family Guy, How I Met Your Mother, stand-up comedy, and Kevin Smith movies while all the other kids were outside playing...pfft, losers. You don't become SWE's member of the month by playing basketball....you make millions of dollars playing basketball...huh....damn you Joss Whedon and Kevin Smith!
5. So . . . Sonya . . . what’s going on with that? Any hints for what us readers can expect to happen next between them? Are we going to see a duel to the death with Jagre Hett anytime soon?
Lol....oh wow....um, well, to be fair there would probably be mortal combat between Jagre and Vyse even if she weren't in the picture because the characters rub each other the wrong way...and since Vyse wants to rub the right way with Sonya that certainly help matters does it? All I can say though is that Sonya and Vyse are good friends (probably Vyse's only friend at the moment), and they both have a mutual respect for one another...possibly a mutual attraction, you'd have to ask Sonya about that though, all I can tell you is what Vyse feels. As for the future between them....well, look up that one Yoda quote...you know the one I mean....not the "Do or do not there is no try" but the other one....but she does look smoking in a white bikini, that's all I'm saying.
6. How does it feel the be the newest Brogie? How do you think Kaldroa will contribute to the group that has become a major part of SWE?
I was completely amazed and honored that Mike dropped me a request. He's a great writer and there hasn't been a single post he's written that hasn't blown me away. And the other writers, the Brogies, they are such a fun read and its both a joy and a wonder to see how all they're different personalities and backgrounds mesh into one dysfunctional family, and we all know you can't spell dysfunctional without spelling fun, and I can't wait to see how Kal blends in, because at this point I don't really know. I'm thinking though he'll be the laid back guy that people come to see when they want to be cheered up....so long as they don't come near his kitchen. Nothings written in stone though, I guess you'll know for certain what niche he fills in when I do.
7. Are there any future plans for your characters that you’re excited about? (Please tell us about them)
I don't really plan things out well. But I do have an idea for Vyse and the rest of Tempest Squadron that I think people will enjoy....*gulp* I hope anyways. And as for Tolan, I plan to take him into a completely new direction because I'm learning that I suck as a starship captain. I can't say anything for certain yet on him, but stay tuned for details after the commercial break. Plans....not so, much, but I do have ideas and hopes for my characters if they manage to survive the war. Kal....may open his own restaurant, and Tolan hopefully remarries some day, and as for Vyse....hmm...maybe he'll be my first character to quit smoking, who knows though, that guy is a freaking mystery.
